Thai universities may rule on transgender graduates' attire
Bangkok (dpa) - Thailand’s Council of University Rectors decided to allow each of the country’s universities to decide whether to permit transgender students to dress in the style of their preferred gender at graduation ceremonies, a news report said Monday.
The decision followed a case this month in which Bangkok’s prestigious Thammasat University allowed five cross-dressing students to wear women’s gowns as they received their diplomas.
Thammasat rector Somkid Lertpaitoon was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying the council agreed on the resolution unanimously after deciding all students should be treated with equal respect.
Along with Thammasat, Srinakharinwirot and Kasetsart universities in Bangkok, Ubon Ratchathani University in the eastern city of Ubon Ratchathani and Burapha University in the coastal city of Bangsaen in the northern Gulf of Thailand now allow students to dress at graduation ceremonies according to their preferred gender.
Thammasat also allows undergraduate students to cross-dress in classes.
Under the resolution on graduation dress by the Council of University Rectors, transgender students must lodge a formal request with their university and pass a psychological test.
Thailand, a predominately Buddhist country, has a relatively high tolerance for transvestites, transgender people, gays and lesbians.

Good for you, Thailand. Not happy with the “cross dressing” comment but good for you.
