Genderqueer Chicago: T-Friendly Bathroom Initiative Launches!

shashirosa:

In 2011, more than 500 businesses and organizations will be asked to sign a pledge that commits them to allowing gender-variant customers to use the bathroom of their choice.

Businesses that sign the pledge will be awarded a window decal, so that gender-variant people can easily identify trans-friendly businesses.

Trans-Friendly Restrooms Sought in Chi.

BATHROOM X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Young activists in Chicago are asking business owners to commit to making public restrooms trans-friendly.

Under the T-Friendly Bathroom Initiative, this year 500 businesses and organizations will be asked to sign a pledge that they will allow gender-variant customers to use the restroom of their choice. Those signing the pledge will receive a window decal so that potential customers can easily identify them.

Kate Sosin, a project organizer and cofounder of Genderqueer Chicago, noted that while Illinois law prohibits discrimination against transgender people, they are still sometimes harassed and even subjected to violence when using the restroom that fits their identity. “We expect this will dramatically improve the way transgender people experience our city and state,” she said in a press release posted by Windy City Times.

The initiative, led by youth organizers from Genderqueer Chicago, is endorsed by Join the Impact-Chicago, Equality Illinois, Video Action League, and others. For more information, click here.

In the Press: When is it Okay to ID a Person as Trans?

genderqueer:

By Matt Kailey:

“I believe that it’s okay and even necessary to identify a person as transgender or transsexual if:

> That person requests the identification. If I save five kids from a burning building, you can bet I want the headline to read “Transsexual man rescues five children.” I want people to know that your friendly neighborhood trans person is just as capable as everyone else of doing something heroic, something positive, something beneficial – and that trans people are good and good people are trans.

> That person’s transness has something to do with the story. If a trans person is murdered and there is any hint of a bias crime, we need to know. If a trans person is arrested for some stupid bathroom incident, we need to know. If a trans person loses his or her job or wins a discrimination court case, we need to know. Even if a trans person does something wrong that is somehow related to being trans, that fact is newsworthy.

I believe that it’s not okay and completely unnecessary to identify a person as trans if being trans has nothing to do with the story.”

Malawi couple break up?

Steven Monjeza has renounced Tiwonge Chimbalanga  and married another.

Monjeza and Chimbalanga have been the center of an international firestorm ever since the pair was arrested in late 2009, charged with unnatural acts and gross indecency.

Last month a Malawi judge sentenced them to 14 years, a decision that was commuted by the country’s president Bingu wa Mutharika.

Dorothy Gulo is Monjeza’s new wife and the freshly minted  husband  disavows any past with “gay trash”  Chimbalanga.

“We were pardoned but I know the law can bounce back on us if we are not careful. Although I claimed that I still love Tiwo, I did not mean it. I have never had sex with him as was revealed in court. That is why the medical examination failed to establish any anal penetration. I was coerced into the whole thing.”

At the moment he puts cold water on any plans to leave his homeland, and insists he just wants to make a life with his happy bride.

Project Queer: THIS makes me wonder if Mr. Monjeza was aware that Chimbalanga was actually a transgendered woman NOT A GAY MAN - a fact that the mainstream media STILL chooses to neglect to point out. This article opens up all sorts of new doors to this story. Is this true? What happened? Is Monjeza really just a straight man caught with a transgender woman or is he protecting himself from the dangers of his homophobic government by hiding his true love?

ACTION ALERT! theCIRCLE needs YOU!

theCIRCLE is a non-profit organisation who does their part in helping trans/gender queers get what they truly need to become the person that he or she has always felt that they are - whether it involves knowledge, obtaining binders or packers, or even just getting a little support from the community every once and awhile.

I suggest that any and all trans-friendly or gender queer persons, blogs, businesses, or whathaveyou follow theCIRCLE to help promote their good cause and educate others on the matter.

Here is a message from one of the creators of theCIRCLE:

theCircle (transcircle.org) [is] a project to help out the trans/gender non-conforming community to the best of my ability. our first campaign, if you will, is Trans-Positive. it’s about embracing one’s self. pretty much all it is is people submitting a photo, their name, and their favorite part about being trans/genderqueer. i suppose if you’re not either, you could say your favorite part about the community. they say if you say positive things, you’ll think more positively. since dysphoria gets on us a lot, i feel like we could really use this.

Want to submit to theCircle’s transpositive campaign?
