Be You: Gender-Neutral Restrooms Become the Law

transqueery:

When Mayor Michael Nutter signed legislation Thursday to afford equal rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, he said he hoped Philadelphia would become “the most LGBT-friendly” city in the world.

One piece of that comprehnsive legislation will forever alter the restroom…

Q u e e r . C o l l e c t i o n s: I am working on a new article that discusses heteronormativity v. homonormativity, and I want to read from YOU!

riley-ferretboy-konor:

So feel free to respond to any (or all) of the following questions:

  • What do the words ‘heteronormative’ and ‘homonormative’ mean to you? (How do you define them?)
  • How do they affect your every day life?
  • Where did you first read/hear about these words (if at all)?
  • What are your most common experiences involving heteronormativity and/or homonormativity?
  • What, in your opinion, is the best way to combat normativity?

Comment here with answers, send questions, or submit (long) responses. Anonymous is on for asks/submissions. Feel free to use it!

NOTE: DO NOT send me fanmail via Project Queer. Please use the above links located at my personal blog. Thank you.

The Test Shot spent an evening with Open Barbers- a queer haircut social space run by Felix Bear Lane and Gerygory James Vass in Finsbury Park, London. This video is a portrait of the kind of work they do, and captures the essence of why it is so important to feel that your identity is understood by your barber as a transmasculine or genderqueer person.

Check out this video! Great idea & space for queer/trans people in London or anyone who just wants a good haircut. You can find more about Open Barbers on their website or Facebook.

CHECK OUT: The Transgender and Gender Identity Respect Campaign

The groundbreaking Transgender and Gender Identity Respect Campaign has been called by advocates the first government-funded campaign focused exclusively on the betterment of transgender and gender non-conforming people. Developed at the DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) in close consultation with transgender advocates and community members, the campaign aims to increase understanding and respect for the transgender and gender non-conforming communities, decrease incidents of discrimination and increase reporting of discrimination to OHR. The five campaign ads feature actual community members, and will appear citywide on bus shelters in the fall and winter of 2012.

Help spread word about the campaign by sharing the ads on Facebook and Twitter using hashtag #TransRespect.

Hey everyone! We’ve been watching A LOT of videos around the web, but we are missing mainly videos where the body is more expressive or the focus is not only on someone talking. Please reblog, we are looking forward to get to know everyone and make a kick ass documentary! Thanks a lot!

I just noticed a few folks using terminology that I either do not identify with or dislike being identified with when...

riley-ferretboy-konor:

(TW: misgendering, t slur, gay slurs, racial slur)

So I am going to make a brief post about what words I feel comfortable with being referred to as. I will include some words that I have been called that I am NOT comfortable with.

I am a queer non-binary trans* guy. I also identify as genderqueer or pansexual. Basically, my sexuality, sexual orientation, and gender identity are all queer. I use he/him/his pronouns, but I am a combination of masculine and feminine.

Words you may use to describe me (respectfully):

Transgender, trans*, trans* guy, queer, genderqueer, dandy boy, fag, faggot, homo, they/them/their, etc.

Words you may NOT use to describe me (whether you mean to cause harm or not):

Dyke, FTM, tr*nny, ladyboy, boi, he-she, she-he, shemale, she/her/hers, girl, woman, man, dude, etc.

When referring to my body, please do not use any of the following words:

Breasts, boobs, tits, titties, pussy, vagina, mangina, “lady parts”, etc.

Many of the aforementioned words are listed not just out of personal preference or dislike, but also may be racist, cissexist, or transmisogynistic. Please think before you use them. I will make this available on my blog here for future reference, and I will probably add to this with time. Thanks for reading.

Op-ed: Transgender Dinosaurs and the Rise of the Genderqueers

Why the traditional concept of transgender is slowly fading away.

BY RIKI WILCHINS

Project Queer sidenote: I am not sure how I feel about this article right now. I mean, I dislike it and the article is obviously problematic, but I cannot seem to put my exact thoughts into words at the moment.

EDIT: Once I can collect my thoughts, I will write something up about this. Feel free to reply with your own thoughts.

Like, I get wanting to fit in and feel socially accepted and all, but why must we assimilate in order to be accepted?

wanderlustprince:

In regards to passing, I do not want to change who I am to feel more like a guy.

I AM a guy. I do not need anyone else to tell me how to be what I am.

I AM who I am.

I AM what I am.

If folks do not want to accept me for being a genderqueer trans* guy, I do not want their acceptance. I do not want their blessing or approval.

I am a proud genderfuck. I do not want to change a thing about myself to make OTHERS more comfortable with my appearance, behaviour, etc.

Fuck assimilation.

Fuck heteronormativity.

Fuck gender-conformity.

Why should anyone have to do that?

EDIT: I realise that some folks strive to pass for safety and self-acceptance. To each their own. You feelings are valid. I am raising these questions, because I am genuinely curious about why these things exist - the gender binary, social constructs of beauty and gender, etc.

I have my own battles with my gender presentation daily. For a long time, I stressed passing until I questioned why it was so important to me. I truly want to hear/read from everyone else’s point of view. Please do not think that I am guilting anyone here.
