ACTION ALERT! Pride Not Pinkwasing: Israel Out of LGBT Film Festival - The Petition Site

Join Alice Walker, Angela Davis, Susan Stryker, QUIT (Queers for Palestine) and many others to demand an end to pinkwashing at the SF LGBT Film Festival. Despite protests, the Festival continues to accept sponsorship from the Israeli consulate.  The consulate’s role is part of a broader campaign by the Israeli government to pinkwash its human rights abuses with gay-friendly PR. Gay filmmakers and other cultural leaders are joining the International Academic and Cultural Boycott of Isreal, calling on Festival producer Frameline to put an end to pinkwashing at the Festival.  The worldwide boycott calls on academic and cultural institutions not to sponsor or partner with the Isreali government, as Frameline is doing.

“Boycott, divestment, and sanctions are time-honored nonviolent strategies for political and social change,” said Waker and others in a letter.  QUIT, as part of an ongoing campaign to build support for Palestinian self-determination, has held demonstrations and protests at previous festivals, demanding an end to pinkwashing.

Pinkwashing involves efforts to portray Israel as a country that espouses ostensibly Western liberal or progressive democratic values such as feminism, gay rights and multiculturalism. The hope is that target audiences will identify with Israel and thus discount concerns about Israel’s human rights abuses against Palestinians.

Or as I put it on another occasion, pinkwashing is an attempt to change the subject: ‘don’t look at Gaza where we’re besieging 1.6 million people, look over here where we’re having a gay pride parade!’

Uganda’s “Kill The Gays” Bill Appears To Be Dead

Uganda’s internationally-denounced bill that would have prescribed all Ugandan gays to be put in jail for life, would have required reporting to the government anyone suspected of being homosexual within 24 hours, and possibly would have demanded for the death penalty for the “crime” of homosexuality, appears to be dead.

Ugandan lawmakers plan to debate the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which would impose the death penalty on gay people in some instances, when they resume session next week.

UGPulse reports on the Thursday announcement from legal and parliamentary affairs committee chairman Stephen Tashobya.

“Tashobya says the committee will hold public hearings where stakeholders’ views will be heard and a report made to the House for debate and possible passing before Parliament closes the 8th Parliament.”

Government-owned newspaper New Vision last week reported that speaker of parliament Eward Kiwanuka Sekandi has already summoned MPs to report March 22 to take up “unfinished business” including the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. The parliament’s term expires in two months.

David Bahati, the prime sponsor of the bill with links to American evangelical leaders, hailed the development and vowed to continue to lobby for the bill.

Meanwhile, Ugandan gay activists this week cheered the resignation of ethics and integrity minister James Nsaba Buturo, a vocal antigay leader who has blamed the West for promoting homosexuality in Africa. Afrik News reports that he lost his seat in the February general election and attributed the defeat to gay campaigners. He was to have stayed in office until May 15, when the new government is seated.

Did David Bahati Know He Was Appearing On A Homosexual Lady’s Show?

David Bahati, the Ugandan lawmaker behind the Kill The Gays bill, is in Washington D.C. this week.

He was supposed to attend the International Consortium of Governmental Financial Management Conference, a three-day event (about exactly what you think it is) that wrapped up today. Except nobody would let him in.

Was he using the conference as a cover to get into the U.S.? Or just because he wanted to have a great chat with Rachel Maddow?

Gay Holocaust VictimsGermany’s Third Reich considered homosexuals common criminals; many were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Once there, they were forced to wear a pink triangle as a brand of their supposedly ‘special’ perversion. Given the fear many gay people lived under back then, it is little wonder how little of their experiences in the death camps is known. However, it is thought that their death rate was higher than any other group.
