Goodbye, Tom Emmer

Republican Tom Emmer conceded the Minnesota governor’s race to Mark Dayton on Wednesday, surrendering after a statewide recount failed to substantially change the Democrat’s nearly 9,000-vote election night lead.

Emmer supported a Christian rock band that called for the execution of gay people.

“Minnesotans made their choice, by however thin a margin, and we respect that choice,” Emmer told reporters gathered at his home outside Minneapolis.

He could have sued over the election outcome but decided against it after a key state Supreme Court decision went against him. He cited the court’s opinion in his concession, but also alluded to major issues facing the state.

“I do not believe a delay in the seating of the next governor will unite us or help us move the state forward,” Emmer said.

The statewide recount was Minnesota’s second in just two years, following the 2008 Senate standoff between then-GOP Sen. Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken. Franken came out on top in that recount, but his margin was just a couple of hundred votes. Few observers thought Emmer could close a gap of thousands.

Emmer’s concession vaults Dayton back into power just four years after he quit the U.S. Senate after a single term. It also gives Democrats the governor’s office, a prize they haven’t won in 20 years.

Dayton has to move ahead quickly with his transition. He’s due to take office Jan. 3 and the state has a budget deficit of more than $6 billion.

Minnesota tightened up its election laws after the Coleman-Franken recount exposed weaknesses, and carried out the governor’s recount in just a week. Emmer’s concession came just as a state canvassing board was due to begin going over the recount results before certifying a winner.

Coleman chose litigation after he lost the recount, and both sides poured an estimated $10 million into a legal fight that had major implications for Democrats’ grabbing a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. The Minnesota seat stayed vacant for more than half a year.

This time around, some Democrats had feared Emmer would pursue a lawsuit simply to keep Dayton out of office for weeks or months. That would have put GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s tenure into overtime just as GOP majorities are taking over at the Capitol.

But even some Republicans said they hadn’t seen anything that would have supported a successful legal challenge by Emmer.

Dayton’s victory marks a revitalization of a political career many thought over after his single Senate term ended in 2007. Dayton, 63, slogged through that term and was ridiculed by Republicans for temporarily closing his Washington office in 2004 in response to classified information about a possible terrorist threat.

When Dayton decided not to run for that office again, he said he was clearing the way for a Democrat who would have a better shot at winning. But Dayton immediately set his sights on a bid for governor, moving ahead with it by 2009.

Dayton plowed through a crowded Democratic field and won the nomination in a close primary that personally cost him millions. The department store heir didn’t ante up as much for the general election, but he never trailed in the polls.

Far from a polished speaker, Dayton’s supporters point instead to his stiff resolve and call-it-like-it-is approach. Some Democrats cringed at Dayton’s loud call for an income tax increase, but he never wavered on it.

This was Dayton’s second run for governor, after he finished far back in a 1998 primary. He previously served as state auditor and held cabinet-level positions in state administrations in the 1970s and `80s.

Emmer, 49, is a three-term state legislator whose reputation as a Capitol firebrand made it a surprise for some when he beat out a more experienced lawmaker to become the GOP nominee in the spring. His campaign was marked by early missteps and he trailed in early polls through the summer before closing the gap in the fall. His campaign also was hurt by some moderate Republicans defecting to endorse a third-party candidate, Independent Tom Horner, who finished a distant third in the race.

Writer: McCain a Pandering Pansy

JOHN MCCAIN 201005 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

John McCain’s legacy continues to look dubious: a columnist with tucsonsentinel.com had very harsh words for the Arizona senator, who is pulling out all stops to prevent the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Writer Jimmy Zuma said “The Maverick” is now “The Panderer,” engaging in “senseless and spineless logic” in calling for another study on repeal of the military’s gay ban. Other words directed at McCain: coward, sissy, squirmy, and pansy.

It Bothers Rush Limbaugh That Man-ish Congresswomen Have To Take The Stairs To Pee

It’s still a boy’s club at the House of Representatives: There is no lady’s room on the main floor. (There is a breast pump room, however.) That’s got even Rush Limbaugh upset, so you know this is a nonpartisan issue! Except Rush’s idea of LOLing about the gender disparity came five seconds later:

“All of this time, all of this focus on equal rights, all of this focus on how women are discriminated against, and no women’s room. Now, a lot of Democratic Congresswomen could have probably used the men’s room and nobody would have said anything. Might not have really noticed anything. But, still!” That’s Rush!

Michigan Newspaper Runs Anti-Gay Ad

Antigayad

You may remember that, several months ago, Family Research Council and Request Foods took out a full-page ad in Michigan’s Holland Sentinel. The ad was a list of lies about gays and lesbians. Looks like another homophobic ad has made its way onto the pages of the newspaper.

The half-page ad features a picture of two men in a casual embrace along with anti-gay biblical quotes and the phrase:

“How sad when God’s original design is twisted.”

It was put together and paid for by a Pastor named Earl Shetler, who also runs a tree removal service in Saugatuck, Michigan, a popular gay and lesbian resort town.

Dr. Laura Staying on Radio

DR LAURA X390 (GETTY IMAGES) | ADVOCATE.COM

Well that didn’t take long.

Three months after announcing she would sign of from her current radio show at the end of the year in the wake of her now infamous “n-word” rant, Dr. Laura Schlessinger will debut a new 3-hour radio show on Sirius XM in January.

The Associated Press reports Dr. Laura will begin on Sirius XM on January 3, three days after signing off from her current radio show.

Dr. Laura apologized her use of the “n-word” in August and announced on Larry King Live she decided not to renew her contract when it expires this year because she doesn’t want her opinions, however provocative, to be muzzled.

“I want to regain my First Amendment rights,” she said on the show. “I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”

No stranger to controversy, in 2000, gay activists launched StopDrLaura.com after she referred to homosexuality as a “biological error.” Further, she said, “a huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys.”

Eddie Long Denies Sex Abuse Allegations

BISHOP EDDIE LONG X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Bishop Eddie Long has officially denied allegations he used his authority as a spiritual leader to force four former members of his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church into having sexual relations with him.

Long filed four responses in DeKalb County, Ga., state court Monday to the four lawsuits filed against him. Long is also asking that the lawsuits be dismissed.

In September, after the allegations first came out, Long refused to resign, telling the cheering packed crowd at his church, “We’re here today and every Sunday morning. And I’ll be here next week.”

Maurice Robinson, Anthony Flagg, Jamal Parris, and Spencer LeGrande filed suit against Long in September. In his responses Long admits to taking the men on trips and showing them affection in the form of hug, but denies any kind of sexual abuse took place.

Long is a longtime opponent of marriage equality, and his church counsels gay members to become heterosexual.

Elton John on Why He Sang for Rush

ELTON JOHN 201010 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Pop icon Elton John says he sang for conservative talk behemoth Rush Limbaugh’s wedding in June to open a dialogue with him.

“When he asked me to play at his wedding, my agent said, ‘Well of course you won’t be doing it,’ But I said, ‘Well, let me think about that first,’” John told the London Telegraph. The singer was paid $1 million for his performance.

Though Limbaugh has said there is no proof that AIDS can be transmitted heterosexually and described it as a “hyped” disease, John noted that Limbaugh and President Barack Obama currently share the same stance that marriage should be for heterosexual couples and civil unions are for gay and lesbian couples.

Still, John said he got along well with Limbaugh and his new wife, Kathryn Rogers, and that hopefully, “I think this year I can start to put things in motion by trying to get him on my side.”

Catching Up With Peter LaBarbera

Marriage-or-Perversion

Let’s start out our week with something light and fun, i.e. checking in with Peter LaBarbera’s last few posts to see who/what has him all mad ‘n’ sad.

1. Personal attack on Jeremy Hooper:  Peter is really, really excited that there are still a couple newspapers left that defend bigotry and hatred, so when he heard that the Manchester Union-Leader in New Hampshire was sticking to discrimination by refusing to print same-sex marriage announcements, he got a tingle in his no-nos and wrote a piece about it!  Of course, to illustrate that piece, he used Jeremy Hooper’s wedding photo and slapped the word “perversion” on it.

Jeremy responds:

Peter (presumably) has his own conscience and shame system to answer to. Nothing I could say here would exacerbate the questions that surely (or at least should) weigh on his and his loved ones’ minds.

2.  Personal attack on and straight-up lies about Autumn Sandeen:  Pete really, really doesn’t like Autumn.  He dislikes her so much that he willfully and repeatedly twists the facts of her story to serve his agenda, claiming that Autumn “left [her] wife and children,” despite the fact that Autumn has repeatedly corrected the story.  This is the set-up for a piece where Pete uses juvenile slurs against transgender people and sticks his fingers in his ears, referring to a genuine, widely recognized medical condition and its treatment as “sickening.”

Autumn responds thoroughly here, and ends like this:

I hope no one ever manages to shut LaBarbera up. He has the right to free speech, for sure, and he should be free to exercise it. Beyond that though, I find his over-the-top style of writing quite entertaining. And, he makes a good case, by the negative example of his bigotry of trans people, as well as lesbian, gay, and bisexual people, of the real world need for LGBT people to be treated with dignity and respect by both government and corporate America.

3.  Evan Hurst and Joe Jervis are sooooooo mean.  In case you missed it, Joe Jervis pointed out that Peter is on the same side as the Ku Klux Klan on a very specific issue:  that of Jennifer Keeton of Augusta State University, who, like a child, wants the counseling department at the school to adjust their degree requirements for her “special needs,” i.e., her religion-based bigotry against gay people.  The school told her, “No, dear,” so now, of course, she’s a Religious Right cause celebre.  Peter turned Joe’s post into something it really wasn’t, as all Joe did was point out the similar goals of the two entities on the issue.  I agreed with Joe.

Here comes the fun part:  Peter is trying to “get back at us” by saying that Joe and I are on the same side as NAMBLA when it comes to openly gay scoutmasters.  Of course, this is not true, as Joe explained on our Truth Wins Out Facebook page, and which I will explain now:  Though it is distasteful and wrong that the Boy Scouts don’t allow kids’ fathers who happen to be gay to be scoutmasters, thus depriving those dads and their kids of the same opportunities that kids with straight dads have, they are a private organization and are thus completely within their rights to discriminate.  The Country Club near my house is a nice little Slice of the Confederacy, as the only faces of color you’ll see on that golf course belong to employees in white suits, or possibly the Mayor on a special occasion, and they’re not too keen on Jewish members either.  Is it gross?  Yes.  Is it a stain on our otherwise lovely neighborhood, its only benefits being its scenic nature and what its proximity does to the property values in our historic district?  Yes.  Are they within their rights as an exclusive private organization?  Surely.

And that, children, is what you call a “nuanced position.”  Wingnuts do not have nuanced positions.  Everything them to them is childlike:  good vs. evil, black vs. white, made-up words like “Judeo-Christian” vs. Big Mean Outside World, etc.

The rest of Peter’s piece involves taking an interesting piece written by Johann Hari, about gays in fascist movements [interesting because there have never been any heterosexuals involved in fascist movements — it’s a purely gay thing, y’all], spices it up with a little revisionist [completely made up] history from notorious bigot Scott Lively, who has his paws on more hate groups [the real, certified kind, not the “Peter things these people are mean” kind] than you’d expect imaginable from one human, and who basically handed Ugandan homophobes the rhetorical gun they needed in their campaign against gays in that country, and then he attempts to sum it up:

Homosexual radicals’ deranged attempts to link pro-family conservatives to racist fringe groups are part of their larger goal of demonizing and marginalizing “homophobic” Christians and social conservatives.

Uh, it’s really not a big leap:  ”Pro-family conservatives” tend to be more defined by who/what they hate than what they actually support, and it tends to come in the form of condemnation of large groups of people.  Irrational fear and hatred of other races is very, very similar to irrational fear and hatred of sexual minorities.  It’s  no coincidence that social conservatives cynically exploit race in their fights against reproductive health, while simultaneously believing/being worried that every Muslim is a possible terrorist, while simultaneously imagining that gay people they’ve never met having equal rights will affect their lives in any way.  The only thing our equality will ever change is white fundamentalists’ self esteem, because their self-created pedestal over society, which they have enjoyed for decades, is being eroded by the advancement of minorities.  The only thing that is happening is that slowly but surely, their unearned status is being brought down to size with the rest of us.  And I’m sure that messes with ‘em somethin’ fierce, as we Southerners say.  But their status was never merit-based in any way!  There is nothing special or worthy about Fundamentalists that suggests they should have the keys to society.  Indeed, when one looks at the statistics, one finds that on most “moral questions,” fundamentalists do no better than anyone else, and often do much, much worse.

Anyway, he rambles for approximately 1400 paragraphs, and even figures out a way to talk about fisting, which is like, his favorite subject besides that photographer in New Mexico who [tragedy!] had to abide by the same laws as everyone else as a business owner, who he also mentions.  Oh, and he takes some time to cry and lie some more about Catholic Charities being “forced” out of business in Massachusetts.  Of course, they freely chose to close up shop, unwilling as they were to follow the same laws as everyone else.  [Sensing a pattern here?  It’s sort of like dealing with preschoolers who don’t like to share, and moreover, have not had good naps that day.]  It’s kind of a Wingnut Fever Dream Greatest Hits.

Finally, he asks, “Could the American state become a national, homo-fascist agent?”

Uh, I don’t know Peter.  Could unicorns come to life and force us all to eat sparkly cupcakes?  Could pie be any more delicious?  Could puppy fur BE any softer?  These are all questions, to be sure.  I don’t know what kind of questions they are, but they’re certainly questions.

Read his entire million word piece if you have nothing better to do with your life.

Alaska Sen. Candidate’s Antigay Adviser

JOE MILLER ALASKA X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Sarah Palin–endorsed, Tea Party–backed GOP candidate for Alaska senator Joe Miller (pictured) can add another antigay bullet point to his résumé. One of his campaign advisers is a self-described “Christian educator” whose organization denounced Rush Limbaugh for having Elton John appear at his wedding.

According to Miller’s campaign disclosure forms, Miller has paid Terry Moffitt of High Point, N.C., $2,500 for consulting services.

According to Mother Jones, Moffitt is the head of the Family Policy Network, a group that opposes homosexuality. The group runs a project called Hope for Homosexuals, which encourages “practicing homosexuals to ‘come out’ of that destructive lifestyle, and to ‘come home’ to the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.”

During his primary campaign, Miller wrote in a letter to Alaskan voters that “the traditional Christian view” is that “homosexuality is a sin, and therefore immoral.”

Since then he has not campaigned on an antigay platform, however, saying instead that he believes the “central issue of the campaign” is the federal debt and government spending.

Aiona & Transformation: What Hawaii Media Isn’t Telling Voters About the Governor’s Race

Posted by B. E. Wilson on @ 8:26 amArticle printed from speakeasy: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasyURL to article: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/10/21/aiona-transformation-what-hawaii-media-isnt-telling-voters-about-the-governors-race/

“If you have any idols in your home, we’re gonna burn ‘em! If you have any witchcraft items in your home, we’re gonna burn ‘em!” – It’s like something out of the Spanish Inquisition or from the depths of the European Medieval period, mysteriously transported to sunny Hawaii of 2010, at the height of a hotly fought campaign for governor no less.

As the Associated Press reported yesterday, on a scandal roiling the Hawaii gubernatorial campaign, Republican candidate for governor James “Duke” Aiona is lashing out at the campaign of his Democratic rival Neal Abercrombie for allegedly promoting a video I’ve compiled which begins with a clip of Aiona, in July 2008, enthusiastically stating that he was a member of Transformation Hawai’i, which is a local chapter of the International Transformation Network.

As the AP describes,

“The video was produced by Bruce Wilson, who co-founded a blog about religion and politics. It includes clips of Aiona at a 2009 meeting in Hawaii of the International Transformation Network, an evangelical Christian group, and its local arm, Transformation Hawaii.

Other clips are of ITN’s 2008 meeting in Argentina in which a pastor calls on followers to collect idolatrous objects to be burned, and of Aiona urging viewers to attend a 2005 ITN meeting in Hawaii…

Wilson said ITN leaders appear to believe gays are possessed by demons and native art should be destroyed.

“It would be hard for Duke Aiona to be more enmeshed in Transformation Hawaii,” Wilson said. “I’m just observing, here’s Duke Aiona. He’s heavily involved with this movement. Here’s what the movement believes.” [emphasis mine]

The video in question is available at the link above.

Carl Paladino, Gay Bar Landlord

CARL PALADINO X390 (GRAB FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Long before Carl Paladino referred to gay people as “dysfunctional,” he made money off of them, collecting rent from two gay clubs located in buildings he owned in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, in 2004 and 2005, Paladino’s son William ran the gay bar Cobalt, which was housed in a building owned by one of Paladino’s many companies, Huron Group LLC. The club was run under another corporate name.

In 2005 the club began catering to straight clientele.

But his relationship with the gay club industry didn’t stop there, because he also owned a building that housed Buddies II, operated under the name Queen City Entertainment in 2005 and 2006.

Paladino’s spokesman, Michael Caputo, declined to comment on the report. The report comes one day after Paladino apologized to gay people for what he called his “poorly chosen words.”
