Fox News Asks Whether Marriage Equality Was Overplayed on TV

Media Matters is challenging Fox News’ Jon Scott, who echoed a TV news critic’s question about whether coverage of marriage equality before the Supreme Court was “disproportionate” to the size of the LGBT community. Scott seemed sympathetic to the argument put forward immediately following two days of hearings before the high court by Mediaite’s TV news critic, Joe Concha. Concha had pointed out studies that put the number of LGBT people at between 3% and 4%.
But to counter Scott’s suggestion that the media ignored more weighty issues in favor of covering the landmark cases before the Supreme Court, Media Matters assembled a montage of what Scott actually covered on his show, Happening Now, during that week.

Rev. Slams Civil Rights, Gay Rights Link
Breaking with several state- and national-level leaders of the NAACP, an Iowa-based preacher who heads a chapter of the country’s oldest civil rights organization said he is sick of gays and lesbians “hijacking the Civil Rights Movement.”
Rev. Keith Ratliff Sr., president of the Iowa-Nebraska chapter of the NAACP, added there is “no parallel” between the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the gay rights movement, and to draw such a correlation is “an insult,” according to the Des Moines Register.
Ratliff was speaking at a rally earlier this week for allowing a referendum vote on marriage equality, which has been legal in Iowa for nearly two years.
Other NAACP leaders like National Board Chair Julian Bond, President Benjamin Jealous, and Chairwoman Roslyn Brock have all expressed their support for gay people, and have been working to expand the scope of their focus on social justice to include gay rights.

VA's Del. Bob Marshall: Repealing DADT Puts America's Facebook Status With Muslim Allies In Jeopardy
Virgina’s State Del. Bob Marshall is pretty much the only guy who actually cares about what Muslims think of America around the world, DIDN’T YOU KNOW? This is why Marshall, who wants sexually active homosexuals banned from military service, knows that once Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is repealed, American alliances with Muslim troops are going to be put in jeopardy!
“[W]e’re pushing the envelope here and we’re going to jeopardize our alliances, I think, when we fight beside Muslim troops who have a real hard time, you know, dealing with this kind of behavior,” Marshall tells Virginia’s CBS 6 News in an even toned manner, so you know he’s not just some crazy.
See, the next time America enters a war zone with troops from Pakistan and Iran (and that will happen when…?), those Muslims are totally going to throw us gays in front of enemy fire. To say nothing of Muslims currently serving in America’s military! Which Marshall, uh, doesn’t address. He just doesn’t want to see Iraq change its Facebook status with America from “in a relationship” to “it’s complicated.” As if the gays had that sort of power.

NC State Rep. Larry Brown Won’t Waste Taxpayer Cash Treating ‘Perverted Lifestyles’ With HIV
North Carolina’s State Rep. Larry Brown wants to cut off funding for adults with HIV, because really, they’re just a bunch of homos who “caused it by the way they live.”
This man is adorable! Speaking to the Winston-Salem Journal about his hopes and dreams for the upcoming legislative session, Brown says he also wants to work on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. But yeah, he definitely won’t “condone spending taxpayers’ money” on helping people “living in perverted lifestyles.” Not that he specifically meant gays or anything! He means any adult who contracts HIV through sex or drugs. Because just like smokers who bring lung cancer upon themselves, people who contract HIV are the ones at fault.
Also: No more state funding for medical conditions like ulcers (stop stressing yourself out!), high blood pressure (stop eating so many burgers!), and diabetics (stop having bad genes!).
Behar Slams Willow and Bristol Palin
Joy Behar and a panel a commentators including out comedian Judy Gold and talk show host Dick Cavett discussed the antigay outburst by Bristol and Willow Palin on Twitter, suggesting the Bush twins and Chelsea Clinton would never have done such a thing.
“It’s beneath contempt,” Behar said, referring to Willow’s use of the word “fa**ot.”
One of the commentators suggests Willows words say more about Sarah Palin as a parent than they do of her daughter.

Bristol Palin Apologizes for Antigay Slurs
Bristol Palin took to Facebook to apologize, or not, for antigay slurs she and her sister wielded in response to a young man who criticized their mother Sarah Palin’s television show on the social networking site.
“Willow and I shouldn’t have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize,” wrote Bristol on behalf of her younger sister, who has since deleted her Facebook account, according to TMZ. She continued, “On a nicer note, thank you for supporting the great competition in Dancing with the Stars!”
The younger sister had used the antigay slurs against a Facebook friend who dared to suggest that the show Sarah Palin’s Alaska appeared to be a failure. Then Bristol, a reality TV personality in her own right from Dancing With the Stars, jumped to her sister’s defense.
However, hours after posting the apology on Wednesday, Bristol seemed to begrudge the need to say she was sorry.
“Thank you supporters who continue to support,” she wrote. “The haters are already pulling out all the stops this week to destroy.”

I use the pronoun “he,” because Samantha is now Charles Kane. Yes, he’s had two gender reassignment procedures, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to switch genders twice. And he now believes the entire practice should be outlawed.
