Nigerian Football Federation Denies it Banned Lesbians from Soccer

By: Leslie Dobbins

The BBC is reporting that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is now denying that there is an official ban in place that would prohibit lesbians from playing for or representing their country. NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire told the BBC, “Unfortunately, a section of the media has blown petty speculation out of proportion. We have already circulated Onyedinma’s speech at the NWFL’s annual general assembly, clearly she never said anything of the nature that has been alleged,” he said.

Fox Sports Soccer picked up Nigerian news reports last week that Dilichukwu Onyedinma (pictured), the chair of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), who also serves as a member of the NFF executive committee, said that there was an official ban in place, and that any woman associated with lesbianism would be disqualified from play. “Any player that we find is associated with [lesbianism] will be disqualified,” Onyedinma reportedly said during the Annual General Assembly of the Women’s League body.  “We will call the club chairmen to control their players and such players will not be able to play for the national team.”

Because the ban would violate the Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s (FIFA) current anti-discrimination policies, CNN International reported that FIFA had written the NFF for clarification over Onyedinma’s comments.  “This is not a FIFA investigation, but a preliminary step, fully in line with how any normal procedure would be conducted by FIFA’s Disciplinary Department,” the FIFA spokesperson said.  “Until we establish more details, we cannot speculate on any sanctions, or indeed any next steps.”

However, Olajire is denying that FIFA even reached out to their organization.  “The NFF never received any letter or query from FIFA,” he said.  “The NWFL chairperson never made such sensitive comments and the NFF are not under any FIFA probe or query.”

Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time that the Nigerian team has found itself in hot water for bigoted tactics within their organization.  On the eve of the 2011 Women’s World Cup, Eucharia Uche, the former head coach of the Nigerian national team, admitted to purging her team of all its lesbian players and she was quoted by the NY Timesas saying that homosexuality is a “dirty issue,” and “spiritually, morally very wrong.” Uche was cautioned by FIFA for her remarks.

Landmark Lesbian Magazine 'The Ladder' on Display at Smithsonian

By: SheWired Editors
The Ladder: A Lesbian Review is generally thought to be the nation’s first widely distributed lesbian publication, and was first published in 1956 by the revolutionary Daughters of Billitis, according to The Washington Blade. And now, the first issue of the magazine is on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s American History Museum in Washington, D.C. The original issue is on display as part of the museum’s American Stories exhibits.

Legendary activists Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin started the publication, later bringing on fellow LGBT rights pioneer Barbara Gittings. The Ladder appears at the Smithsonian courtesy of the late LGBT rights pioneer Frank Kameny, who owned an impressive collection of papers and political artifacts, including protest signs and publications, documenting his decades-long participation in the LGBT equality movement.

'Finding Bluefield' Tells a Lesbian Love Story Set Against the Back Drop of the '60s

By: SheWired Editors

Novelist Elan Barnehama’s latest book Finding Bluefield tells the story of lesbian love set amidst the politics of the 1960s and we have an excerpt.

Here’s a synopsis:

In the summer of 1960, when Barbara Phillips arrives in Bluefield, Virginia, to begin her medical residency, she thinks she is headed for an uneventful few years filled with work in an obscure little town where no one knows her—which is exactly what she wants.

Everything changes when she enters Nicky’s diner and begins a journey that will last a lifetime as she falls in love against her better judgment and best-laid plans. The free-spirited Nicky later attends the 1963 March on Washington and impulsively and anonymously sleeps with a man in hopes of getting pregnant and starting a family with Barbara. When Nicky gives birth to Paul, her sister steps in to adopt Paul for his own “protection.”

Nicky, Barbara, and Paul escape Bluefield and make a life in upstate New York, only returning to Bluefield years later upon hearing of the death of Nicky’s sister. As their journey comes full circle, Barbara, Paul, and Nicky find their return to Bluefield is the catalyst for facing family secrets and forging family ties.

Tumblr Lesbian Cissexism

  • Tumblr Lesbian: I am so lesbian omg penis is SO GROSS! Because I'm a lesbian!
  • Me: You don't have to like penises, but saying it's because you're a lesbian equates gender and genitalia by implying that man = penis and woman = vagina. This erases the gender and possibly sexual identity of trans* people, particularly trans* women.
  • Tumblr Lesbian: OMG STOP HATING ON ME I DON'T HAVE TO LIKE PENISES STOP OPPRESSING ME
  • Me: ...
  • Tumblr Lesbian: I'm such a lesbian! Hey, that trans guy is cute!
