The 2013 National School Climate Survey is GLSEN’s eighth national survey of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. It is a crucial tool in GLSEN’s mission for fighting anti-LGBT bias in K-12 schools across the nation. The information gathered from this survey will help GLSEN to inform education policymakers and the public about the right of all students to be treated with respect in their schools. Many students in the past have also used the survey information to advocate with their teachers and principals for safer schools for LGBT students.
You can help GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) inform education policymakers and the public about what’s really going on in our nation’s schools by completing the 2013 National School Climate Survey. If you attended high school or middle school sometime during the last school year (2012-2013), identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and are at least 13 years old, tell us about your experiences in school. (If you did not complete the entire school year you can still participate in the survey.) The survey is completely anonymous.
The survey asks questions about your experiences in school, including hearing homophobic remarks, being harassed because of your sexual orientation and/or how you express your gender and how supportive your school is of LGBT students.

PFLAG: Cultivating Respect: Safe Schools for All

For too many of our children, attending school can be a frightening experience. A recent study found that 9 out of 10 LGBT students experience some form of mistreatment in school. As parents, families, friends, and allies we need to do something to make schools safer for ALL students. This is why PFLAG National created the Cultivating Respect: Safe Schools For All initiative, which seeks to provide support, education, and advocacy to students, parents, families, friends, and educators to help them create a learning environment that is conducive to the educational success of all students. PFLAG chapters are working in their communities to work directly with schools and their stakeholders to provide support, resources, training, model policy and creative programs to create this environment of respect.

PFLAG’s 40 year history has placed us on the front lines of fighting innumerable instances of bullying, harassment, and discrimination in our nation’s schools and communities, and partnerships have always been vital to the success of these community efforts.  We are holding up one such partner—GLSEN—at the national level. This organization has been PFLAG’s longtime ally and partner on safe schools work. You can find out more about GLSEN by clicking through the Featured Partner piece to the right.

Ready to get started? Here are the top ten ways you can find support, get education, and become an advocate for safe schools:

  1. Learn the Facts - Students who are, or are perceived to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender—LGBT—are at a higher risk for depression, self-harm, and dropping out of school.
  2. Understand the Language - Using respectful and appropriate language is an important benchmark to set a tone of respect and understanding.

  3. Stop Bad Behavior - Don’t ignore or excuse discriminatory behaviors or harassment, and don’t be immobilized by fear: Not taking action can endanger students and make the classroom unsafe.

  4. Set the Policy - A strong and inclusive anti-harassment policy not only protects students; it also protects the school.

  5. Plan School-Wide Activities - Showing films, reading books, and planning schoolwide activities offers opportunities for everyone to learn and participate. These programs help build community, empathy and understanding.

  6. Be Public - Adults should go public with their support for diversity, and oppose bullying and harassment. Signs, stickers and other public displays tell youth that their diversity is welcomed, supported, and protected.

  7. Address Cyber Bullying - Take cyber-bullying seriously. Add cyber bullying to existing anti-harassment or bullying policies, and help provide training and education for students, teachers and parents.

  8. Train and Educate Everyone - It is imperative that every adult—parents, teachers, administrators—is trained to respond to bullying in ways that support every student.

  9. Work for Comprehensive Health Education - Youth must have a clear understanding of their bodies, and health, in order to respect themselves and their classmates.

  10. Provide Resources - Learn more about our partners and resources.

The Ali Forney Center is the largest nationwide organization dedicated to LGBTQ homeless youth.

There are currently 39 items on their Amazon wish list, most being undergarments like tank tops, plain tees, undies and chest binders for the youth they shelter. A majority of the items are less than $20 and the most expensive item is only $35.

Let’s try to help them by Tumblr bombing the shit out the Ali Forney Center with direct donations and purchasing everything on their wish list!

40% of homeless youth in America are LGBTQ, so if you support the queer struggle, reblog this, purchase something from their wish list and get involved!

PLEASE donate or reblog or something. Unless you want to keep pretending that marriage is the biggest queer rights issue so that you can say you’re an ally without actually doing anything to help.

Liberty Counsel To Gay Teens: You’re Depressed Because You’re Sinners

By Zack Ford

Matt Barber

The Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber has penned a letter to gay teens — which he condescendingly qualifies as “gay” teens — that confirms the clear animus he and his fellow conservatives have for LGBT people. His outright condemnation that homosexuals are sinner going directly to Hell is offensive enough, but worse yet, he suggests that gay teens are not depressed because of the homophobia they experience, but merely because they’re sinners:

God’s word also says that when we sin sexually, it’s particularly egregious because our bodies are the temple of Christ. This separation from God – a natural result of sexual sin – can lead to depression and even despair.

If you feel such despair, know this: it is not “homophobia” causing it, as adult enablers might tell you, but, rather, it is the sin itself that causes it (or struggling alone, absent Christ, with the temptation to sin). […]

If you continue down this wide, empty path, make no mistake: it will not “get better.”

It gets much, much worse. […]

Kids, take your sexual confusion – your struggle with sin – to Christ.

No one else can give you rest.

Of course, by telling young people to reject the very core of their identities and deny themselves the opportunity to experience love in their lives, he is reinforcing the very despair many LGBT youth struggle with.

‘So you think your child is gay?’ New guide answers parents’ common questions

Poll shows 81 per cent of people would be comfortable with having a lesbian, gay or bisexual child

SYTYCIGStonewall today publishes a guide for parents who think their child might be lesbian, gay or bisexual. So You Think Your Child Is Gay? answers parents’ common questions about sexual orientation, including ‘is it just a phase?’, ‘did I do something wrong?’ and ‘will I still be welcome at church?’. Stonewall is distributing the pocket-size guide to thousands of GPs’ surgeries, libraries and schools across Britain.

YouGov polling for Stonewall’s Living Together report shows 81 per cent of people in Britain would now be comfortable if their child grew up to be lesbian, gay or bisexual. However, coming out remains a stressful experience for many gay young people and their parents. Although gay people today have plenty of sources of support when they choose to come out, few resources exist for parents of gay young people. Stonewall’s new guide will help parents support their children without worrying needlessly about the ‘impact’ of their sexual orientation.

Stonewall Head of Education Wes Streeting said: ‘Many parents worry about what being gay means for their relationship with their children and have all sorts of questions that they’re sometimes afraid to ask for fear of saying the wrong thing. So You Think Your Child Is Gay? provides upbeat and straightforward advice to parents, which focuses on the most important thing of all – giving children love and support, whatever their sexual orientation.’

Stonewall is distributing copies of So You Think Your Child Is Gay? to local authorities, schools, libraries and GP surgeries across Britain. The guide is also available online at www.stonewall.org.uk/parentguide, or can be ordered from Stonewall’s Information Service on 08000 50 20 20.

President Honors Late PFLAG Founder With Citizens Medal

By Zack Ford

Today, President Obama awarded the Presidential Citizens Medals to several recipients, among whom was the late Jeanne Manford, who publicly defended her gay son and founded Parents, Friends, & Family of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) to advocate for other gay sons. Here is what Obama said about her in his remarks:

When Jeanne Manford learned that her son Morty had been badly beaten up at a gay rights demonstration, nobody would have faulted her for bringing him home, holding him close, just focusing on her child.  This was back in 1972.  There was a lot of hate, a lot of vitriol towards gays and lesbians and anyone who supported them.  But instead, she wrote to the local newspaper and took to the streets with a simple message: No matter who her son was — no matter who he loved –- she loved him, and wouldn’t put up with this kind of nonsense.  And in that simple act, she inspired a movement and gave rise to a national organization that has given so much support to parents and families and friends, and helped to change this country.  We lost Jeanne last month, but her legacy carries on, every day, in the countless lives that she touched. […]

Accepting on behalf of Jeanne Manford, her daughter Suzanne Swan.  (Applause.)  In an era when peaceful protests were met with violence and coming out was a radical act, Jeanne Manford knew she had to stand by her son, Morty.  Side-by-side, they marched proudly down the streets of New York on Stonewall’s anniversary, calling upon other parents of gay and lesbian Americans to show their children the same love and acceptance.  Jeanne’s courage lives on in progress she fought for and in PFLAG, the organization she founded, which today claims more than 200,000 members and supporters in over 350 chapters.  For insisting that equality knows no bounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, the United States honors Jeanne Manford.  (Applause.)

The Presidential Citizens Medal is the second highest civilian award, second only to the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Teacher Says Gays Have No Purpose In Life, Wants LGBT Kids Banned From Prom

by David Badash/The New Civil Rights Movement

A teacher of special needs children in Indiana is speaking out with other Christian parents and students by demanding LGBT kids be banned from a Sullivan High School prom. When asked, teacher Diana Medley responded to a reporter that she believes gay people have no purpose in life, and agrees that anti-gay parents and students should create a separate, “traditional” prom that would ban gay students from attending. Sullivan High School itself is allowing all students to the official prom, but these militant anti-gay Christians are trying to get students to attend their prom instead of the school’s official prom.

“Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesn’t believe anyone is born gay,” mywabashvalley.com reports:

“I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal,” said Medley.

“Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agreewith them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason,” said Madley.

“‘So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?’ No I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t. I don’t understand it. A gay person isn’t going to come up and make some change unless it’s to realize that it was a choice and they’re chosing God,” said Medley.

“I don’t understand it. A gay person isn’t going to come up and make some change unless it’s to realize that it was a choice and they’re chosing God,” said Medley.

Medley, sadly, is in good company. As mywabashvalley.com reports, students, parents, and Christian pastors met at a local church to discuss gay students at prom, and they’re ganging up to raise money for a separate prom.

Obama to Honor PFLAG Founder

The late Jeanne Manford, who started PFLAG after her gay son was beaten, is one of 18 recipients of the Citizens Medal.

TW: anti-gay violence

President Obama announced today that he will posthumously honor Jeanne Manford, cofounder of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, with the Citizens Medal.

In 1972, Manford and her husband, Jules, formed a support group for parents of gay children, an organization that grew into PFLAG, after their gay son, Morty, was brutally beaten during a gay rights protest in New York City and police failed to intervene.

“In the years that followed, Manford continued to march and organize, even after losing Morty to AIDS in 1992,” notes a White House press release. Jeanne Manford died in January at age 92.

“Jeanne was one of the fiercest fighters in the battle for acceptance and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people,” PFLAG executive director Jody Huckaby said upon Manford’s death.

Manford is one of 18 people who will be honored with the Citizens Medal in a ceremony at the White House a week from today. President Obama selected them from among 6,000 names submitted by the public. Other honorees include activists for people with disabilities, veterans, Native Americans, and many other groups and causes, plus the six Sandy Hook Elementary School staff members who died in the mass shooting there December 14.

Boy Scouts Say Member Leaked Potential Antigay Policy Change

News that the Boy Scouts of America was considering revising its long-standing ban on gay members was made public through an unintentional leak, reports the New York Times.

BY SUNNIVIE BRYDUM

image

The Boy Scouts of America did not intend to make public its consideration of a policy change relating to its long-standing ban on gay scouts and troop leaders, according to The New York Times.

“Someone leaked the information,” Tico A. Perez, BSA’s national commissioner, told executive board members at a town hall meeting Tuesday, according to a tape recording obtained by theTimes. Perez said the leak came from someone who “either didn’t like what we were doing, or they thought they were going to be helpful to the conversation…. We are amazingly sorry with the fact that this got out and got ahead of us.”

The organization itself touted a board meeting Wednesday as a potential turning-point in the decades-long ban, but then released a statement delaying any decision until BSA’s National Executive Board meeting in May. Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts, confirmed in an email to the Times that the information had been leaked, and that the source of the leak had not been identified.

The BSA has been under intense public pressure since it confirmed in January that the organization would reconsider its long-standing ban on gay scouts and troop leaders. In 2012, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to the antigay ban after a two-year internal review. On Monday, ousted lesbian den mother Jennifer Tyrrell and a group of supporters delivered petitions with more than one million signatures calling on the organization to change its antigay policy. Corporate sponsors, including Intel and UPS, have backed away from the organization, citing its discriminatory ban.

Last month, the organization announced it would take calls from members of the public weighing in on the proposed policy change, but the BSA was evidently overwhelmed by the response. Just days later, the number BSA offered for public feedback was answered by a prerecorded message directing feedback to the Scouts’ website.

Boy Scouts Gay Ban Controversy Highlights Growing Tug-Of-War Between Right And Left

When the Boy Scouts of America announced this week that it was delaying a decision to end a ban on openly gay troops and leaders, some noted that the organization seemed to be walking a treacherous line.

The Scouts have long had a policy forbidding openly gay children and adults from participating in the program, and more than a decade ago, the Supreme Court upheld its right to the ban. But in recent months, pressure from gay rights activists, corporate donors and religious organizations has increased, and the Scouts’ decision to delay a vote on ending the ban reveals the difficulty organizations with anti-gay policies face as gay rights become increasingly mainstream.

Much of the pressure is coming from corporate America, which has shifted dramatically over the last several years, creating internal policies that protect gay and lesbian employees and publicly supporting same-sex marriage. Last April, when the Scouts declared at an annual meeting that it would not change gay-members ban, a number of its biggest corporate donors stopped giving. UPS, Intel, Merck and United Way halted contributions, each citing its own internal anti-discrimination policies.

Watch: Today's Tearjerker From The PLACE That Helps Families Accept Their Gay Kids

By: Sunnivie Brydum

In conservative Modesto, Calif., there’s a place where LGBT kids can turn to help their families understand and accept them. Founded by Elizabeth Zapien-Plata and her husband (and former Marine) Ed Plata in 2007, PLACE is an acronym for People Learning Acceptance, Creating Equality, and seeks to create a safe space for LGBTQ youth between the ages of 14 and 19, and to provide support and education for their families and the broader community.
