Newt Gingrich is calling on the Republican Party to recognize the “practical reality” of same-sex marriage and the “very real and complex human circumstances” surrounding the issue. Though Gingrich emphasized that he still believes “as a matter of faith” that marriage is between a man and a woman, these latest comments are at odds with what he has said in the past and with views expressed this week in conservative media circles. 

In an appearance on Fox News’ On the Record, Gingrich called the issues surrounding same-sex marriage “a very complicated human problem,” saying “Republicans need to take a deep breath and understand, we need to deal with the human side of this equation.”

It’s a surprising turnabout for the former House speaker, who just this year said same-sex marriage was a “pagan” concept and a “violation of our civilization.”

Longtime social conservative Newt Gingrich has made a surprising admission, saying he accepts marriage equality as inevitable and he’s OK with it.

Voters’ legalization of same-sex marriage in three states in November’s election changed the debate over the issue, and conservatives have to come to terms with it, the former House speaker and Republican presidential aspirant told The Huffington Post. “It is in every family,” he said. “It is in every community. The momentum is clearly now in the direction in finding some way to … accommodate and deal with reality. And the reality is going to be that in a number of American states — and it will be more after 2014 — gay relationships will be legal, period.”

Antigay American Family Association Backs Gingrich

The American Family Association, a designated hate group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, has endorsed Newt Gingrich for president.

Don Wildmon, the founder and chairman of the American Family Association, announced his support for Gingrich on Tuesday. The group, which promotes conservative Christian values and has a nationwide radio network of more than 180 stations, is a coup for Gingrich, who has struggled to convince conservative voters to overlook a past that includes multiple divorces and admitted marital infidelity.

“Newt Gingrich recognizes the threat to our country posed by judges and lawyers imposing values upon the country inconsistent with our religious heritage, and has proposed constitutional steps to bring the courts back in balance under the Constitution,” Wildmon said in a statement.

AFA’s extreme public comments against LGBT people are legion: The group’s Bryan Fischer recently said that gays pose a “heightened security risk” for the country and told the Values Voter Summit in October, “We must choose as a nation between homosexuality and liberty, because we cannot have both.”

Of the AFA’s announcement, Gingrich said, “Don Wildmon has been one of the most important leaders in the country in the battle to uphold our founding principles. I am humbled and honored to have his endorsement.”

Gingrich is attempting to shore up support among Iowa social conservatives as the state’s January 3 caucus nears. A Washington Post/ABC national survey released Tuesday showed Gingrich and rival Mitt Romney in a dead heat.

Newt Gingrich explains that discrimination against blacks may be wrong — “you have to decide whether you’re going to tolerate discrimination based on race,” — but against gays is perfectly acceptable, suggesting that there actually is no discrimination against gays because gay people can drink from the same water fountains as straight people. Note that Gingrich doesn’t actually come out against discrimination against blacks, stating that “you have to decide whether you’re going to tolerate” it.

Why Would NOM President Brian Brown Attend Gingrich DC Fundraiser?

Brian Brown, the president of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, Wednesday night attended a Washington, D.C. fundraiser for GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, and everyone is asking the question: 

Why would the president of an organization supposedly created to “protect marriage” support a candidate who is a serial adulterer, and on his third marriage? Shouldn’t that be an automatic disqualifier?

LGBT immigration advocates are pushing Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to put his money where his mouth is on the “humane” immigration policy he espoused that would allow undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States.

Gingrich, the current GOP presidential front-runner, made the remarks Tuesday night near the end of the CNN Republican presidential debate on national security held in D.C.

The former U.S. House speaker said the GOP should embrace a policy allowing undocumented immigrants to remain in the country if they’ve resided in the United States a long time.

Gingrich: Same-sex marriage is a ‘temporary aberration’ | advocate.com

Same-sex marriage is a temporary aberration that will dissipate, Newt Gingrich said here today.

“I believe that marriage is between a man and woman,” Gingrich said. “It has been for all of recorded history and I think this is a temporary aberration that will dissipate. I think that it is just fundamentally goes against everything we know.”

Gingrich, who has been married three times and has previously admitted to being a past adulterer, made the statement in response to a question from the audience during an event he held at a Best Western hotel conference room.

One Iowa, a civil rights group, said Gingrich’s statements are offense and disrespectful to thousands of gay and lesbian Iowans who are loved by families who belong to all political parties and play active and productive roles within the state’s communities.

“Mr. Gingrich’s comments are out-of-touch with Iowans and I don’t think that he is the right person to be lecturing Iowans, or anyone, about loving, committed marriages,” said Troy Price of One Iowa.
