What I Learned From Gay Sex: Misogyny And Homophobia

TW: heterosexism, misogyny, gay slur

by Simon Moritz

Peter is a gay man I slept with once. When he did come home with me and we were naked in my bed, he kissed my neck, and I moaned, high-pitched and breathy. He stopped, looked me in the eye and said, “Don’t do that. It’s faggy.”

I don’t want to give up the term ‘queer’, because it still bugs people like the middle-class gay homeowners in the Castro who have halted plans to open a shelter for homeless queer youth in their beautiful neighborhood. I use it because every time I say it, I get an unpleasant jolt of memories of being called vile names or bashed, and I guess I hope that if I say it with enough aplomb and nonchalance, those memories will lose their power to subdue and terrorize me. The jaws of assimilation have closed around the word queer, but they haven’t managed to crush it into dust just yet.

Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities
“Intimate, audacious, and exploding with interpretive trajectories, these images reach beyond their edges to re-invision projects of queer visiual testimony.”—Juana Maria Rodriguez, University of California, Berkeley
Going beyond identity politics, Femmes of Power is a photographic tribute to a diverse range of queerly feminine subjects whose powerful and intentional redress explodes the meaning of femme for the twenty-first century. Celebrating the growing femme presence, here you will meet members Atlanta’s Femme Mafia, San Francisco’s Harlem Shake Burlesque, and Paris’ Fem Menace.
Femmes of Power features both everyday heroines and many queer feminist icons, including Michelle Tea, Virginie Despentes, Amber Hollibaugh, Marla Stewart, Lydia Lunch, Kate Bornstein, and Lois Weaver.
The first book of its kind, Femmes of Power unsettles the objectifying male gaze on femininity and presents femmes as speaking subjects and high-heeled theorists. Look closer—these powerful, sexy, and sincerely ironic feminine figures are larger than life, bravely challenging femininity’s negative connotations and replacing femme invisibility with a fresh new face for femme-inism.
Del LaGrace Volcano is one of the world’s leading queer cultural producers, cited and reproduced in numerous publications, journals, and books on visual art, including The Drag King Book.
Ulrika Dahl is a writer, activist, and cultural anthropologist who has been a femme voice in the Scandinavian feminist and queer debate since 2002. She teaches gender studies at Södertörn University College in Stockholm.

that blog about that queer kid: pet peeve

iragray:

i seriously hate when gays and lesbians give me shit when i come out to them as trans (this doesn’t usually happen with people who identify differently, including straight people, for whatever reason, and i expect that shit from straight, cisgender people).

i also really, really hate when transgender men and womyn give genderqueer, genderfluid, and other non-binary folks shit due to not understanding that gender is a social construction. no, i don’t make up a bunch of new words for gender (just one haha), and if i did, who gives a fuck? that’s my right to define my own body. i have no tolerance for that shit. non-binary folks are not confused about their gender identities. you are, and that’s not their problem.

Asexuality and the Queer Community

quirkysaur:

(Was requested by author to post here, as they don’t themselves have a tumblr)

“If you’re here from tumblr, here’s the short version of this post:

I am a bisexual member of a queer group which includes quirkysaur as a very welcome member. I respect her identification as asexual and as queer, and I don’t regard her as a straight person invading queer space so that she can oppress us with her straight privilege. This is because 1) she isn’t straight and 2) she behaves respectfully towards the various queer people in the group.”
