Project Queer has over 25,000 followers today.

I started Project Queer in February 2010 to get a rise out of the trans*, gender non-conforming, and queer communities. I wanted this rise to be an interest in obtaining knowledge about various communities, our rights, related news/media, and queer culture.

Since then, PQ has become my outlet to inspire, motivate, and help educate fellow activists - and even those who oppose our movement(s).

Thank you to all who follow and continue to spread the word.

Sincerely,

Riley

Does anyone know the origins of any of the following words?

riley-ferretboy-konor:

  • radscum
  • cis scum
  • truscum

I am writing a piece about the evolution of scum terminology in queer, trans*, and gender non-conforming culture. Any input - comments, resources, whatever - would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

UPDATE: I am aware of the definitions of the terms. What I am looking for are the words’ origins - who coined them, when and why they came about, etc.

I may be considering writing a piece on the evolution of scum in queer and trans* culture.

projectqueer:

You know, radfems/radscum, cisscum, truscum, etc.

UPDATE: I am going to be working on this article today. Does anyone have any information on when those aforementioned terms came about? And who coined them first? Any information or linkage is appreciated!

Paintings With Muslim Clerics in Gay Settings Cause Uproar in Pakistan

School officials at the National College of the Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, received threats of violence after publishing a series of paintings depicting Muslim clerics with homoerotic undertones.

BY SUNNIVIE BRYDUM

A series of paintings showing Muslim clerics in scenes with gay undertones has sparked such uproar in Pakistan that the university which published the images has shut down the publication where the images appeared, according to the Associated Press.

Officials at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, shut down the Journal of Contemporary Art, which published the paintings by artist Muhammad Ali in a summer edition. School officials also removed all issues of the journal from campus bookstores and dissolved the journal’s editorial board after the images sparked threats of violence from Islamic extremists, according to the AP. A court is reportedly considering whether the artist, the journal’s editorial board, and the school’s headmaster can be charged with blasphemy.

“The college’s decision to cave to Islamist pressure underscores how space for progressive thought is shrinking in Pakistan as hardline interpretations of Islam gain ground,” reports Asif Shahzad for the AP. “It was also a marked change for an institution that has long been one of the leading defenders of liberal views in the country.”

Own a Piece of Divine, Sylvester, and the Cockettes

Artist Todd Trexler is making his historic posters available for the first time in 40 years.

BY DIANE ANDERSON-MINSHALL

If you are old enough to remember these posters for the Nocturnal Dream Shows at the Palace Theatre in San Francisco, it will be a happy (if maybe dizzy from drugs) walk down camp memory lane. If this is your first view of these historic pieces, they are a great record of the most delirious days of post-Stonewall San Francisco nightlife.

The artist Todd Trexler, best remembered for his iconographic posters and handbills for the Cockettes and Nocturnal Dream Shows at the Palace Theatre in San Francisco in the early ’70s, has released reproductions of the famed posters for the first time in 40 years. These posters feature rising new stars of the time, including Randy Newman, Tower of Power, the Famed Cockettes, Sylvester, and Lady Divine — who trimmed her name to Divine after her live performances with the Cockettes.

The concerts and the Nocturnal Dream Shows were famed as much for their audiences — queers, beatniks, intellectuals — as for the performers, and Drexler’s posters could be found on the kitchen walls of hippies, freaks, and gay men all over the city. As time passed and the success of the shows increased, the posters evolved from single color pen-and-ink drawings on inexpensive white paper to multicolored and color-separated images using mixed media and photography.

Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP)

Check out some fellow queer zines!

“The mission of the Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP) is to establish a “living history” archive of past and present queer zines and to encourage current and emerging zine publishers to continue to create. In curating such a unique aspect of culture, we value a collectivist approach that respects the diversity of experiences that fall under the heading “queer.”
