An investigative report published in 2011 by the magazine Bohemia, national circulation, found that both the download and open couples are common behaviors among adolescents and young people on the island, regardless of gender. The survey was based on group interviews with nine young people between 15 and 23 years living in the provinces of Holguin, Ciego de Avila and Havana.

The film premiered on Friday night at Sundance Film Festival. Afterwards, Radcliffe told MTV: “it’s interesting that the [‘gay scenes’] are deemed shocking. For me, there’s something very strange about that because we see straight sex scenes all the time. We’ve seen gay sex scenes before. I don’t know what a gay sex scene should be any more shocking than a straight sex scene.”
Radcliffe, who is straight, has spoken out for gay rights in the past and has worked closely with Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans and Questioning support organisation the Trevor Project. As he reminded inquisitive crowds on the red carpet at the Eccles Theatre on Friday, this isn’t his first provocative project. Radcliffe starred in Equus in 2008, playing a man who has a sexual attraction to horses. The role saw him perform naked on stage. He said, “What weirded me out the most last night was people were asking me all these questions about gay sex scenes. I was like, “You know I did Equus? Some people are asking me questions like this is a more shocking subject, which is so strange.”
