For the third time in less than a year, a transgender woman has been found murdered in the Cleveland area, leading many to wonder why the area has become such a hotbed of anti-transgender crime.
Transgender and intersex individuals will have much freer choice…
They call it a circus, although it’s more like a vaudeville show. To these Chilean transgenders it’s not only a way to earn a living, but a way to be part of a family.
In our own writings, in the words that are found in articles, blog posts, and our own minds, we unintentionally reinforce the message we most need to confront. We do this when we talk about “becoming a woman” or “becoming a man.” We do this when we use the word “transition.”
Fifi Janevski is one person who won’t let transphobia bring her down — especially while pursuing her dreams on Serbia’s version of “The X Factor.” While auditioning as a performer for the show, Janevski was forced to reveal her transgender identity due to judge Željko Joksimović’s inability to understand why her name was listed as “Filip” on her application.
While we are all conveniently lumped into just four letters, there are different needs for inclusion based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It is not wrong to ask or examine LGBT organizations based on their Transgender inclusion. If they say LGBT… They should be LGBT.
And do not use the T if you are only catering to or addressing FTMs.
A Colorado school board member who found herself in hot water when she said that transgender students would need to be castrated before the student could use the school bathrooms that fit their gender identity is not backing down from that statement. According to The Denver Post, Delta County School Board member Kathy Svenson said that she has no regrets and went further to say she doesn’t believe in homosexuality or people that are transgender; rather, she believes they are simply confused.
It may not succeed at challenging California’s law protecting transgender students, but the Pacific Justice Institute will continue to demonize trans kids either way.

Have you heard of Track Tolerance? It’s a new Tumblr out of Columbia’s journalism school keeping tabs on LGBT issues in New York City, and they’re doing some great work.
In the project linked above, the group asked the top 50 public high schools in New York City whether they have gender-neutral bathrooms available to students. Spoiler alert: Only one school is on file as having an all-gender bathroom, the Bard High School Early College II in Queens. Check out the interactive map above and see for yourself.
When calling the city’s top high schools, most seemed confused about what a gender neutral bathroom was. “The girls use the girls’ bathroom and the boys use the boys’ bathroom,” said a staff member from the Bronx’s Riverdale/Kingsbridge College.
The person answering the phone at the High School Of American Studies At Lehman College in the Bronx said “absolutely not!” when asked if the school had a gender-neutral bathroom.
Other schools said they couldn’t answer without the permission of the department of education. Several schools noted that they have gender neutral bathrooms for staff but not students.
Obviously this is only a snapshot in one city, but I can’t imagine the situation is very different across the country. How many of your high schools have all-gender bathrooms?
